The college, founded in 1974 as an institution of higher education for future engineers, has a compound department system: Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Department of Information and Electronic Engineering, and Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering.

Two out of all the national colleges of technology in Japan have adopted this system in order to meet a social demand for engineers who can cope with the rapid changes in technology and industry.

In addition, Department of Bioengineering was founded, as a forerunner of this field in 1989. Three Advanced Engineering Courses were also established in 1994 to provide the students with intensive training and education in order to become highly competent engineers.
